Daanbantayan Municipality in Cebu

This is the famous Bounty Beach on Malapascua Island, Daanbantayan Municipality in Cebu, Philippines.

DAANBANTAYAN MUNICIPALITY

Daanbantayan literally means ‘daan’ for old and ‘bantayan’ for to watch or watchtower in Bisayan language.

This municipality is located in the northern tip of Cebu Province in central Philippines. Historically, this is the area where watchtowers were built to keep watch any incoming attackers (mostly pirates and slave traders) to the island.

Belonging to its political jurisdiction is the famous Malapascua Island, an island with white sand beaches and with its surrounding waters great for diving and snorkeling.

Based on the census in 2010, Daanbantayan has over 74 thousand registered residents.

DAANBANTAYAN MUNICIPALITY ADMINISTRATIVE SUBDIVISIONS

Just like most municipalities in the country, Daanbantayan is subdivided into smaller political unit called ‘barangay’, each with a ‘Barangay Captain’ heading the community’s political activities.

Daanbantayan has the following twenty barangays:
Agujo, Bagay, Bakhawan, Bateria, Bitoon, Calape, Carnaza, Dalingding, Lanao, Logon,   Malbago, Malingin, Maya, Pajo, Paypay, Poblacion, Talisay, Tapilon, Tinubdan,   Tominjao

For a bit of information, you can take an outrigger boat from Maya Port for Malapascua Island and other island destinations. Maya is also the terminal for buses and other vehicles coming from other places including transports from Cebu City, among others.

In addition, it was thought that the original site of the town of Daanbantayan was located in Tapilon Barangay.

BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The town of Daanbantayan was occupied by the Japanese Imperial Forces in 1942. They then built military garrisons and concentration camps.

Since Cebuanos did not like the presence of such forces, the Cebuanos formed resistance groups (guerillas or revolutionaries—depending on the point of view of the speaker I guess) with the help of the Philippine Commonwealth Army that sent the Japanese forces away.

The liberation of Daanbantayan from the Japanese occupation has since been called the Battle of Daanbantayan in 1945.

You can certainly read this historical facts and even meet some older people still living and can recall the events vividly. And, if you love to visit historical sites, you can surely visit those places where the historic battle took place.

SITES & ATTRACTIONS

No one can argue that Daanbantayan has one of the best white sand beaches in the province of Cebu. The marine life in this northern travel destination boasts its colorful and rich aquatic resources.

One of the most popular travel, adventure or holiday destinations in Daanbantayan Municipality is Malapascua Island. It has great resorts that provide various services including accommodations, restaurants, scuba diving lessons and diving activities, island tours, and other fun and interesting water activities.

Haladaya Festival
Daanbantayan celebrates its annual festival called ‘Haladaya’ festival. In case you don’t know yet, Filipinos love festivities which are, of course a cross-cultural behavior. We love dancing, singing, eating, drinking…

However, since festivity in the Philippines is being deeply influenced by Spanish way of gathering locals into a pueblo to celebrate Christian activities, we often observe these celebrations combined with religious themes.

But, this Haladaya festival is different in the sense that it is meant to honor the legendary founder of the town named Datu Daya. All sorts of visitors and ‘balikbayans’ come to join the festive mood—dances, drinks, food and merrymaking—with families, relatives, friends, and friends of friends…
