Cebu Garments Industry

Cebu garments industry

Cebu produces the best garment products in the Central Philippines. This central island’s textile and clothing industry is booming just like the other businesses in this province’s corners.

The development and explosion of this business industry in Cebu is due to the talented, artistic and devout entrepreneurs who venture into this sector.

Both domestic and foreign business people and investors pour out their utmost to produce the best of their products to satisfy and serve their customers and buyers here and abroad.

Now, there is over hundreds of Cebu garments industries and companies that produce quality, high standard and world-class textiles that are being sold domestically and internationally.

To learn a little more about how Cebu textile industry is like many years back, it is worth looking back Cebu’s history and other Visayan Island’s people who produce such clothing products.

Looking back in the Visayas

Back then, the earlier Visayan textiles were made from hemp materials. This is from abaca plant—a banana specie but the one that does not produce an edible fruit but only a strong fiber.

The fiber from abaca is stronger than that of the banana’s, but it is not soft. Still, nowadays, you can observe producers and people using abaca ropes and other related products, such as the cool hats and native style weavings for interiors and décor products.

Other interesting traditional fibers being used earlier are the sinamay, pina (pineapple) and jusi fibers. These were the iconic Visayan fibers being used as popular and usual source for textiles back then.

Certainly, most Filipinos would know that sinamay, pina, and jusi fibers were (or are still) being used to make traditional garments such as the barong tagalog and terno.

These fibers were world-renowned that they were being exported to many Asian countries, to Europe and America especially during the Spanish period.

A progress or a decline?

Some Filipinos or historians should know that up until the 1900s, Iloilo (in Negros Province just across Cebu Province) was considered the ‘textile capital of the Philippines’ during the Spanish period.

However, the intricacy and tedious effort needed to produce such textiles were both its advantages and disadvantages. When the Manchester cotton arrived in the country in the 1900s, this traditional native textile industry began to decline.

Not only the cotton is cheaper but also easier to produce and has softer texture when compared to the more durable but time-consuming traditional textiles to produce.

Recent Cebu garments & textile production

As you have already seen above, the cheaper and more competitive cotton textiles caused the decline in the production of traditional textile products.

Nowadays, however, you can still find a few specialized cottage industries especially in Argao, Cebu. These smaller producers produce and sell fabrics including ‘hablon’, wool type cloth called ‘kinarnero’ and other limited specialized products.

If you are interested, you can sometimes see some of them on special events (e.g. Gabii sa Kabilin) or places such as in Casa Gorordo Museum.

Now, it is time to move on and let’s check out Cebu garments products being produced by various companies established in Cebu area.
